WriteOff: Deduction Scanner helps U.S. self-employed people find out whether an expense may be a write-off, see the IRS guidance it rests on, and keep the records for tax time. Made by Faba Development LLC.
For anything not answered below, email luke_fairbanks@icloud.com with “WriteOff” in the subject. Say which iPhone and iOS version you are on and what you were doing. Do not send passwords, payment details or tax identification numbers.
No. WriteOff shows how published IRS guidance may apply to the facts you enter and cites the sources. It cannot see your whole tax situation, and it is not a substitute for a CPA, enrolled agent or tax attorney. Confirm anything you plan to rely on with a professional.
Because the facts given do not settle the question, or the situation is one the app does not assess (for example partnerships, S corporations, employee compensation, life insurance). That is deliberate: WriteOff says so rather than guessing.
Tap the item name to correct it, choose a different category, or pick one of the alternatives shown. The rules use what you confirm, not the guess.
2025 and 2026. Rules and dollar limits are applied only for the year you choose. Earlier years are not assessed.
No. WriteOff covers federal income tax only. State treatment can differ.
On your phone, in the app’s private storage, protected by your passcode and included in your device backups. There are no accounts and no cloud copy. If you get a new phone, restore it from a backup to keep your records.
Photos you scan (re-encoded to remove camera metadata), typed questions, and the text recognized from receipts (never the receipt image) go to Google’s Gemini API. We store none of it, and Google does not train on content sent through the paid API. Whether something is deductible is decided by a rules engine from IRS sources, not by the AI. See the Privacy Policy.
